April 2021 weather review

The review of the weather at Ferny Grove during April 2021 is now available.

In April 2021 overnight temperatures were below average. Daytime temperatures were close to average but was the coolest for April in 11 years. April minimum temperatures were near or above average in the first 10 days of the month before an extended period of below average temperatures during most of the remaining of the month. Maximum temperatures during April were near average or below average throughout the month with some above average temperatures.

April rainfall was the highest for April in 6 years and was above average with a total of 130.1 mm (138.6% of the long term average and 308.1% of the site median). Light showers with some moderate to heavy falls occurred at the start of the month tending to drizzle and light rain from the 4th and cleared on the 7th with moderate falls on the 6th. Light to moderate showers on the 8th and light showers on the 17th with some moderate to heavy falls. On the 30th were light to moderate thundery showers. Most of the rainfall during the month fell in the first week where the monthly rainfall total on the 7th had reached 114.4 mm.

Long period rainfall totals improved for most periods as compared with February 2021. Many of the long period totals remained slightly above average or above average, though the longer time periods of 24 and 36 month have remained with negative anomalies. 6 monthly rainfall dropped slightly by 13.4 mm to 71.8 mm above average and 9 monthly rainfall improved slightly by 20.2 mm to 86.2 mm above average. 12 monthly rainfall improved by 113.9 mm to 7.3 mm above average. 18 month rainfall improved by 69.5 mm and was 93 mm above average. 24 month and 36 month remained below average which improved by 109.9 mm to 14 mm below average for 24 month rainfall and improved by 60.1 mm to 165 mm below average for 36 month rainfall. 48 month rainfall improved by 135.2 mm to 24.9 mm above average. Compared with the same period in 2020 the long period rainfall totals improved and significantly for some periods but have worsened for 36 and 48 monthly totals.

March 2021 weather review

The review of the weather at Ferny Grove during March 2021 is now available.

In March 2021 overnight temperatures were close to average. Daytime temperatures were close to average but was the coolest for March in 8 years. Minimum temperatures in March were near average or above average before below average temperatures in the last week of the month. Maximum temperatures during March saw a mixture of below and above average temperatures throughout the month, with a number of near average or below average maximum temperatures in the middle of the month.

Rainfall in March was well above average with a total of 297.3 mm (239.4% of the long term average and 248.5% of the site median). Many days in the first half of the month saw light showers and rain, with a gusty thunderstorm with brief heavy rainfall on the 2nd. The 14th to 20th saw periods of drizzle and light rain with light showers before increasing wet conditions on the 21st to 23rd with drizzle, moderate to heavy rain periods and a thunderstorm. In the last few days of the month were some light showers. Most of the total rainfall in the month occurred between the 14 March and 24 March when 263.3 mm of rainfall fell and 203.3 mm was measured between the 22 and 24 March.

Long period rainfall totals until the end of March 2021 improved for all periods as compared with February 2021. Many of the long period totals became slightly above average, though the longer time periods have remained with negative anomalies. 6 monthly rainfall improved by 179.9 mm to 85.2 mm above average and 9 monthly rainfall improved by 174.6 mm to 66 mm above average. 12 monthly rainfall improved by 149.8 mm but remained 106.6 mm below average. 18 month rainfall saw an improvement of 191.2 mm and was 23.4 mm above average. 24 month, 36 month and 48 month all remained below average but have improved by 188.1 mm to 123.9 mm below average for 24 month rainfall, improved by 106.9 mm to 237.7 mm below average for 36 month rainfall and by 250 mm to 110.3 mm for 48 month rainfall. Compared with the same period in 2020 the long period rainfall totals were mixed between improving and worsening for 6, 9, 12 and 18 monthly but have worsened for 24, 36 and 48 monthly totals. However, many periods have now see lower rainfall deficiencies as compared with the start of summer in December 2020

February 2021 weather review

The review of the weather at Ferny Grove during February 2021 is now available.

In February 2021 overnight temperatures were close to average. Daytime temperatures were close to average and the lowest in 6 years. In February minimum temperatures were close to or below average during the month with some warm nights in the middle of the month and in the last week of the month. Maximum temperatures in February were below average during many days of the month and were above average during some days mostly occurring late in the month.

Rainfall in February was close to average with a total of 126.2 mm (78% of the long term average and 82.1 % of the site median). In the first few days of the month were showers with moderate to heavy falls before mostly light showers and rain until the middle of the month on some days. Further moderate to heavy falls from showers in the middle and later in the month along with some thunderstorm activity on the 19th, 22nd and 23rd.

Long period rainfall totals compared with January 2021 reduced further for most periods and were below average or well below average. 6 monthly rainfall reduced slightly by 20 mm below average to 94.7 mm below average and 9 monthly rainfall slipped by 45 mm to 108.6 mm below average. 12 monthly rainfall was slightly above average in January but fell to 256.4 mm below average in February. 18 month rainfall fell slightly to 167.8 mm below average while the 24 month, 36 month and 48 month rainfall totals fell by a large amount. The deficiencies compared to the long term average for 24 month rainfall fell from -163.9 mm to -312 mm, 36 month rainfall fell from -442.6 mm to -344.6 mm and 48 month rainfall fell from -68.8 mm to -360.3 mm. Compared with the same period in 2020 rainfall deficiencies have deteriorated, in contrast to January where the rainfall totals were less deficient than in January 2020. When compared with the start of summer rainfall totals worsened for all periods except for 24 month rainfall that improved by 54 mm but was still well below average.

January 2021 weather review

The review of the weather at Ferny Grove during January 2021 is now available.

In January 2021 overnight temperatures were above average. Daytime temperatures were below average and the lowest in 9 years. In January minimum temperatures saw a number of slightly warm nights throughout the month accompanied with some below average temperature throughout much of the month. Maximum temperatures in January were predominately below average that saw very few warm days during the month. Daytime temperatures on the 7th to 12th were below average, falling as low of 8 ºC below average on the 8th.

Rainfall in January was close to average with a total of 95.8 mm (66.1% of the long term average). During the first 10 days of the month was an active period of showers, thunderstorms, and light rain. During the middle of the month were some thunderstorms with some moderate falls. A moderate to heavy shower in the evening of the 16th produced 8 mm in 6 minutes. During the rest of the month were light showers on many of these days.

Most of the long period rainfall totals continue to remain below or well below average that reduced in January. As compared with the previous month the 6 monthly rainfall worsened a little to 74.7 mm below average, 9 monthly rainfall dropped from 52.7 mm below average to 153.5 mm below average and 12 month rainfall slipped by 86 mm to 8.2 mm above average. 18-month rainfall dropped significantly from 529.5 mm above average to 150.4 mm below average. 24- and 48-month rainfall improved while remaining below average a 163.9 mm below average and 68.8 mm below average respectively, while 36-month rainfall fell by 806 mm to 442.6 mm below average. Compared with the same period in the previous year these totals have generally improved except for 36-month rainfall falling from 124.6 mm above average to 442.6 mm below average.

UV radiation data

The website have been updated (v1.11.0) with new data that is now available on multiple pages to incorporate Ultraviolet (UV) radiation data following the start of recording this data from 21 March 2021. This addition is part of changes to measure solar radiation and air quality and to switch to a Weatherlink Live receiving unit between 19 and 26 December 2020.

The following pages have been updated with additional data:

  • The home page: the UV Index have been added to the real time updates including the UV Index exposure categories in the international colours with sun protection suggestions when hovering over the UV Index category
  •  Gauges: A gauge for UV Index was added
  •  Recent Graphs, Past Months Graphs and Historical Graphs: updated with new graphs containing UV Index (with banding for the exposure categories) and UV Dose data, as well as adding the UV Index to the existing Solar radiation graphs
  •  Today and Yesterday: Extremes and total for UV Index and UV Dose added
  •  This Month and Year: Extremes for UV Index added
  •  Annual Data Summary: Data for UV Index added
  • All-Time Records: Extremes for UV Index added
  •  Top 10 Records: UV Index records added
  •  Recent Extremes Since: UV Index extremes added for today and yesterday
  • About: updated with new information regarding the addition of the UV sensor that have been installed
  •  System Status: Reworked to align with the system changes and to provide additional system information now available with this change
  •  Glossary: Updated with additional terms for UV Index and UV Dose, including details of the formula used to calculate the UV Dose.

 Other changes made with this update include:

  • The database script that updates the Website Analytics page with current rainfall data by website visitors is now automated at the start of each month. This is a very expensive series of calculations that is only updated monthly.
  • On the Website Analytics page an issue fixed with the showing values greater than 90% on the Daily Rain by Visits graph
  • Fix an issue with the “New records in last 10 days” on the home page that didn’t show the month for a new monthly rain rate record
  • Added a note of discouragement to the link page about not requesting links to be added for commerical or spam purposes.

The UV Dose was added as to quantify the amount of UV radiation received at this location for each hour and over the course of day. This is because it is known that it is both the magnitude and length of time that determines how much radiation exposure is being received for sun protection purposes. This is calculated for each hour and shown on several pages. Whilst the Glossary page provides more information about this measure and how it calculated, for those interested below is the SQL statement to calculate the UV Dose from the real-time data for the Recent Graphs page.

2020 annual weather review

The annual review of the weather at Ferny Grove during 2020 is now available.

In 2020 at Ferny Grove the annual mean temperature was 0.6 ºC above average and the second highest on record behind the current high in 2019. Overnight temperatures in 2020 were also the second highest on record and highest since the current record high of 15.7 ºC in 2010 (0.6 ºC above average). Daytime temperatures were above average at 0.8 ºC above average and was the lowest since 26.7 ºC in 2015.

There were several hot spells during January and February for both overnight and daytime temperatures. The lowest temperature in both months was the highest in 10 years. In March and April above average temperatures persisted but became less frequent, though there were very few cool days in April (the highest on record for April). Warm days continued into May though there was a cold day on the 23rd that was 9 ºC below average. During winter temperatures were generally above average with comparatively few cool nights with many warm nights as well as very few cool days that included a spell of warm days in the first 18 days of June.

The lack of cool nights continued in spring with the coolest night in October being record high before cooler nights and overall below average overnight temperatures in November with a distinct lack of rainfall. Daytime temperatures started in Spring that were close to average, became above average in October and eased back to near average in November. Warm nights then returned in December, though daytime temperatures were generally close to average.

From 11 years of temperature measurements at Ferny Grove annual mean temperatures in 2020 continued a rising trend of the 5 year rolling mean temperature rising from 20.9 ºC in 2014 to 21.4 ºC in 2020, albeit slowed a little compared with 2019. Mean annual maximum temperatures have been rising year-on-year and is 2 ºC higher compared with 11 years ago but have eased a little in 2019 and 2020. Annual mean minimum temperatures have shown a general slight rise in the last 11 years.

Rainfall during 2020 was near average with a total of 1135.5 mm (104.4% of the long term average and much higher than the well below average rainfall total of 581 mm in 2019. The highest daily total rainfall was 93.9 mm on the 7 February during an active period of showers, thunderstorms and rain during most of the month. The rainfall total for February was the highest since 1995. After well above average rainfall in January and February, rainfall eased in Autumn and was below average in April and May with May being the driest since 2004. A severe thunderstorm on 6 March produced 40 mm in 30 minutes.

After near average rainfall in June, July was the wettest since 2012 before below average rainfall in August and September. Later in October was an active period of thunderstorms that included a severe thunderstorm that brought 14 mm of rainfall in 8 minutes and marble size hail on 25 October. November was record dry exceeding the record set in 2019 with a mere total of 4.7 mm. Rainfall in December was near average with an active period of thunderstorms during the middle of the month and was the wettest December in 10 years.

Long period rainfall at Ferny Grove in 2020 improved from the large deficiencies in 2019 but remain below or well below average for periods longer than 12 months and was near or above average for 6, 9 and 12 months. This is a consequence of an on-going multiple year trend of below average rainfall beginning in late 2017.

Thank you: Website after two years

Today marks two years since the launch of the Ferny Grove Weather website. It is great appreciation to everyone who have visited this website during this time. I would especially like to thank those who have showed a continued interest in the website who have visited many times.

During this time, a total of 3879 visits have been made by 1311 visitors of which 59 % have previously visited the website. Those who have visited this website most frequently (in top 1% of all return visits made) have brought 58.2 % of all visits which were made by 20 unique visitors. A total of 5401 page views have been made.

It is not surprising but is very satisfying that visit activity on the website increased during times when the weather is more active and especially during wetter weather which are obvious in the information contained on the Website Analytics page.

There is very strong interest in the real time data on this website which received a large proportion of all activity on the website (52.2 % for the home page and 37 % for the gauges out of all of the page views).

This website came about based on the desire to upgrade the weather station used for improved accuracy and to shift towards measuring the weather in real-time. This website was built as a personal project to view the data that was easy to access, be updated in an automated nature as nearly to real-time as possible and no matter what screen size I am using. It was however not expected to see this interest from everyone but is certainly valued that for those who have wanted to keep tabs on the weather have used this website to do this.

Moving forwards there is much more planned to improve and add to the website and this includes a plan to publish data that to date is not viewable on the website. As this is a personal project and the complexities involved, it does takes time to complete these additions with the accuracy and use friendliness of the website being important components to this get right.

March 2021 rainfall event

 

Between 14 March and 24 March 2021 was a period of rain and showers with some thunderstorms, as a result of an succession of favourable synoptic features. During this period a total of 263.3 mm was observed and was the wettest period since 364.9 mm was observed between the 3 February and 14 February 2020.

In the past 30 years the rainfall event total was the 14th highest on record and was in top 7 % of rain event totals. For March the rain event total was the second highest on record and the highest since the current record high of 278.2 mm between the 28 March and 31 March 2017 associated with Ex-Tropical Cyclone Debbie.

During this rainfall event a large portion of the rainfall occurred during the last few days of the event where 203.3 mm was measured between the 22 and 24 March. The highest 24 hour rainfall total was 129.7 mm on 22 March 2021 and for March this was the third highest 24 hour rainfall total observed on record and which was the highest since the current record high of 153.5 mm on 6 March 2004 (squally heavy rainfall between the 5 and 6 March 2004). When compared to all previous months the highest 24 hour rainfall total was the 21st highest on record and the highest since 143.4 mm on 24 February 2018 (showers becoming heavy rainfall on the 23 and 24 February).

At the time of writing the month-to-date total is 297 mm, which is 177.4 mm above the long term median and 248.3 % of the long term median. For March so far this is the highest March total rainfall since 375.4 mm in 2017, which is the current record high. However considering that showers are expected during the rest of the month the final total may end up as the second highest on record, due to the current second highest being 301.25 mm in 1992. For all months this is the highest since 389.2 mm in February 2020.

Year to date rainfall is currently 519 mm, which is 88 mm above the long term January to March total (16.9 % above average). This is lower than the January to March rainfall total in 2020, which saw both well above average rainfall in January and February in contrast to near average rainfall in 2021 until the above average rainfall in March 2021.

The number of rain days have been 51 so far this year (of least 0.2 mm of rainfall excluding daily rainfall totals that are entirely from dew, mist or fog). This is 16 days above the long term average, is the highest on record as compared with previous January to March totals since 52 days in 2015 and the third highest on record. For March this is the highest number of rain days since 18 days in March 2019.

Note that rainfall totals are based on manually recorded daily rainfall totals measured as the 24 hours to 9am. This data is currently not displayed on this website, except as contained in the weather reviews. Therefore there will be differences to the rainfall totals shown on the website that are collected automatically from a different rain gauge and is measured as the 24 hours from midnight.

Some charts from this period are below where daily data is for the 24 hours from midnight. This is based on the existing graphs on this website, but uses a script that allows to show data between a specific date range, rather than using data in the last x days. This alternate format is not available on the website at this time which could be included in a future update.

New air quality statistics

The air quality data we recently began to measure has been expanded to include statistics for this month, this year and all-time.  This data is now available on the this month and year and all-time record pages.

In the short period that we have been measuring air quality the air is exceptionally clean. For the vast majority of the time the particulates and air quality index values have been extremely low (good) and have been elevated to a slight degree only for fairly short periods of time.

To include these new statistics changes were required to be made to our database. Since the recording of air quality began from 26 December 2020, a routine is ran at the start of each day to fetch the data from the previous day to insert a new row into a database table for that day. However generally only the averages and maximums were shown, without the earliest time of the occurrence. With these improvements now the averages, minimum and maximums are measured for each day along with the time of minimums and maximums.

However, it should noted that these additions began from 7 February 2021, because we only retain the real-time data for 7 days (for data storage reasons). Therefore the time of occurrence will not be shown for statistics before this date. Also we collecting a vast range of daily parameters, most of which haven’t been published to a great deal on the web site, but is being collected for completeness and for future analysis.

To provide a bit more information about how this works a MySQL database procedure (as shown below) is scheduled to run at the start of each day to insert the previous day data into a table of daily air quality averages and extremes. This uses the ROW_NUMBER window function to calculate the earliest time for each individual minimum and maximum for each day. A query for each of one of these calculations are then joined to a query that essentially merges these calculations into one table. Because these calculations are rather expensive a variable retrieves the latest date of data already inserted into the data to limit the quantity of data that is calculated to only the data not already captured in the daily table.

These queries are both performed on the real-time table (every 10 seconds) and an 5 minute interval logged data table, with the results inserted into temporary tables. These two temporary tables are then used to determine the greatest value of each of these data sources to insert the data for each column of data. This is so that the data is suitably captured due any possible network outages that may affect the currency of data. The SQL COALESCE function is used to return the first non- null value from these data sources, with preference provided to the Real-time table.

A PHP script contains SQL queries that retrieve the necessary information from this table and are assigns to variables when the web page is visited. This allows for these statistics to be shown on the web page and is the same principle as several other statistics on these and other pages. The SQL queries are fairly simple because the daily air quality data already shows all the required summarised information for each day.

December 2020 weather review

The review of the weather at Ferny Grove during December 2020 is now available.

in December 2020 overnight temperatures were over 1 ºC above average and was the highest for December in 11 years. Daytime temperatures were close to average and the lowest in 5 years. Minimum temperatures in December were predominately above average during the month and were near or below average in the middle of the month and at the end of the month. Maximum temperatures in December saw two periods of warm days at the start of the month and between the 18th and 23rd, as well as near average or below average temperatures. The first 8 days of the month saw warm days and nights that were up 7 ºC above average during a low to severe intensity heatwave .

Rainfall in December was above average with a total of 145.9 mm (112.9% of the long term average). This is the highest for December since the current record high of 450.1 mm in 2010. The annual rainfall total remained above average at 23.3% above the long term average and was the highest since 1263.6 mm in 2015. Most rainfall in the month occurred between the 7th and 18th during an active period of drizzle, showers, rain, and mild thunderstorms. The first 8 days of the month was dry and later in the month there were some drizzle and light showers on some days. The highest daily total rainfall on the 14th of 70.1 mm was the highest for December since 82 mm on 28 December 1999. This rainfall was a result of light to moderate rain from the evening of the 13th to early on the 14th that was associated with a coastal low pressure system that brought severe weather conditions to coastal areas of south-east Queensland.

Most long period rainfall totals continue to remain below or well below average, that improved for many of these periods. 6 monthly rainfall improved a little to 18.3 mm below average, while 9 monthly rainfall deteriorated from 171.9 mm above average to 52.7 mm below average. 12 month rainfall improved by 91 mm to 94.2 mm above average and 18 month rainfall improved by 100 mm at 38 mm below average. 24 month to 48 month rainfall was between 156.7 mm below average for 48 month rainfall and 366.1 mm below average for 24 month rainfall. Compared with the same period in the previous year these periods improved, and the greatest improvement was 12 monthly rainfall that improved by 564 mm.
